Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:16)
We’ve talked a lot about giving grace to our husbands this month, but what about receiving grace? I used to think giving grace was the hardest to do, but I’m finding now that receiving grace is pretty hard too.
Since becoming a wife, I find it extremely hard to receive grace from my husband at times. So often I don’t feel worthy of his forgiveness and his grace towards me. After I get mad at him or forget to do something my husband asked me to do, I feel so bad. I feel like I really blew it. Even when he reassures me it’s not big deal. That guilt is there. I fell like I can’t receive the grace he’s extending to me.
How do we let that guilt go? How can we forgive ourselves and receive that unmerited favor called grace? It’s not easy, but we can do it. We can cry out to God and ask Him to help us forgive ourselves and accept grace. God desires for us to repent and move on. He doesn’t want us to feel bad or feel guilty after we’ve repented. He does want us to lean on Him so we won’t make the mistake again. The enemy wants us to believe the lies that we can’t accept grace, but the truth is we can. Not because of anything we have done, but because of what Christ has done for us.
It’s so important that we move on in the grace He gives us through our husbands. If not, it can affect our marriage in a bad way. We’re to be joyful and feeling guilty certainly won’t create that. I’m learning to cry out to God and ask Him to help me to let go of the guilt. He wants us to move forward and receive grace from others when they extend it to us. As wives, it’s not always easy, but it’s necessary. Our husbands need us to accept grace when they extend it.
I encourage you today to let go of the guilt. I encourage you to receive that grace from your man and to ask God to help you as you walk worthy of your calling. He’s waiting to abolish that guilt and to give you the help you desire. We truly have to let go and let God do His work.
Lord, thank You for our marriage. Thank You for our husbands who extend grace to us. Help us to receive that grace even when we don’t feel like we can. May we cry out to You for help and for strength to let go of guilt when we’ve repented. Help us to walk in Your grace as we go about our day serving our families. May we never forget the grace You’ve show to us.
In Jesus’ name, Amen
Building strong marriages together,
Heather Strickland
