I confess. I’ve been listening to the oldies station again.

When I listen, I have my ears attuned to hear what the Holy Spirit is speaking to my heart through the lyrics.

Recently I heard “Love Will Keep Us Together” by Captain and Tennille. Believe it or not, I still know all the words. (My hubby never listened to Captain and Tennille growing up and he’s quite amused by my knowledge of their most popular songs.)

In these lyrics, Tennille reminds her love that he just needs to think of her when the temptation of another woman is strong. She promises that even when his looks fade, she will still love him.

It’s a bubbly song that promises unconditional love based on the strength of their feelings for one another.

What I am so grateful for, however, is that I don’t have to rely on human love to keep my marriage together.

Instead, I have the privilege of trusting in God’s love to keep us together!

What a relief!

In this oh-so-familiar passage on love, the Bible says this:

“Love never fails.” 1 Corinthians 13:8 (NIV)

God’s love never fails! He loved us so much that He sent Jesus to pay the price for us.

Let me show you another little something in the Word about God’s love keeping us together with our husbands.

Here’s what the Word says about Jesus, the ultimate expression of God’s love for us:

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”  (emphasis added) Colossians 1:15-17

By Jesus, the love that you share with your husband (something invisible) was created.

In Jesus, all things that were created, including the love you share with your husband, is held together.

Do you feel weak today? Do you struggle with the thought of loving your husband or continuing to walk with him through difficulties that you’re facing? Do you despair that the circumstances that you face in your marriage will ever change? Are you tempted to simply give up?

Don’t do it!

Instead, trust Jesus! He can keep you together. The Word says so.

I’ve prayed this prayer for myself and my marriage many times:

Lord, just hold it together, for us, please. I feel like I’m falling apart, but I know that You never do!

It’s so simple, but so very powerful.

Trusting in Jesus’ love to keep us together,

Rebecca
