Colossians: Week 1
Colossians 1:1-29
Welcome to week 1 of the Colossians on-line Bible study. We are grateful you have decided to join us and we look forward to walking through this beautiful scripture with you!
Chapter 1 opens with Paul’s prayer for the Colossian Christians. Begin your journey of Growth by inviting God to join you as you read His word. Start by reading Paul’s letter as though he is writing to you. Read this chapter as many times as you need to, to fully gain what God wants you to hear. Then move on our GROW study tool.
G: Invite GOD to walk with you.
R: Re-read the verses over as many times as you need to.
O: What is standing out to you?
W: Write your thoughts.
This week’s Prayer focus…
Paul is praying for the Colossian Christians. Pray the following verses for yourself and for your spouse:
Father, I do not cease to pray for _______ or myself. May we be filled with the knowledge of Your will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. May we have a walk worthy of You, fully pleasing You, being fruitful in every good word and increasing in the knowledge of God.
Be sure to leave your GROW in comments. We look forward to hearing your thoughts as we study this book together!
I love Bible studies. We do truly GROW as we study together!
{O} Colossians 1:3 We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you.
Welcome to the Colossians study.
{W} As Paul prayed for the Colossians, we will be praying for you. We love you and your faith in Christ. We applaud your stand for marriage and being all you can be for Christ. We appreciate you doing this study with us! Let the fun begin!
I love this week’s prayer focus! That is what I am praying for all of us.
As I re-read Colossians 1, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for my salvation. For the way the Lord pursues us! That we have been called to be His daughters!!
There is no greater gift! There is no greater purpose than to live for and in Christ.
Have you noticed it is usually hard to find Colossians? Perhaps it’s because Colossians is only 4 chapters long and is neatly tucked away between Philippians and 1 Thessalonians. It’s a book I used to miss so easily and one that I now tend to want to find myself in.
so, here is my G.R.O.W.
G. Inviting God to join me for this study this morning felt so different. I’m sensing it’s because so many of you are joining us as well. 🙂
R. I have read chapter 1 and listened to it via Biblegateway. I did have to read it a few times to “hear” what God wanted to show or say to me. I think because I have gone through this book with my local Imperfect Wives group already and I was looking for something new. There tends to be something to learn even in the moments you are trying to hear His voice.
O. We are to read this first chapter as though Paul is writing to us.. This changed my perspective.
vs. 3. How encouraging is it that someone is giving “Thanks” for me. I’m thinking Paul was thinking about all of the Christians as he said that, not just those is Colossi. God wants us to know He sings over us with Love and Joy. (“The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” -Zephaniah 3:17)
vs5-6. We have HOPE!! I have Hope! Hope resides within me. His name is Jesus!! This leaped at me anew this morning. Jesus resides in me through my Salvation and he is bringing forth fruit through my life. Just what I needed to hear this morning as I think of the changes I have been going through. Such an encouraging word this morning.
vs7. The Grace of God is Truth!! This one I need to chew on more.. I know God wants to take me deeper with Him. I have accepted His invitation and look forward to peeling back the layers this is going to take me through. This is why we have a week for each chapter. We have time for moments like this to chew and really grasp what God wants to say to us.
vs16-17. “For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.” If we have ever doubted that God is with us, these verses pierce the lie that He is not. We consist “in Him.” In Archaic consist means, “to exist together or be capable of existing together.” God exists in us. We exist in Him. Wow.. 🙂
W. I think I may have to many thoughts to write out here. However, what I am confident of is Jesus resides within me. He sees, hears and knows all of my thoughts. Even my anxious ones and the thoughts I mutter when I think no one can hear me. Grace can always be found in His Truth. This one thought compels me to look deeper into His Truths in His Word to find the Grace that is included. (I think I have already started unpacking the layers on this one). God truly is singing over me.. even when satan or my own thoughts betray me. God sings over me because He can see the woman I will eventually become verses the woman I am today. 🙂
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. What is God saying to you as you read through Colossians 1?
{G} Father, thank You for waking me up with Your Word to pray. I love how You lead us to pray Your heart through us for each other.
{R}The longer I serve the Lord, the more I see it about staying fresh with the basics. The more I grow, the more I see how much more I need to grow. The more I pray, the more I see the faithfulness of God in spite of my imperfections. Praying the prayer below over each one of you and your groups. heart emoticon
Colossians:Week 1 Section 2 (for me) Colossians 1:9-14 Renewing my passion for praying the Word. Sometimes we pray according to what we see and feel. Praying the Word is so much better. Gets me eyes looking to Jesus instead of the problem. Jesus is the answer!
The prayer from Col. 1:9-14
{O} Lord, I pray we all may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. That we may walk worthy of You, Lord, fully pleasing You, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in our knowledge of You. That we would be strengthened with all might, according to Your glorious power. May we have patience and longsuffering with joy. We give thanks to You, Father, for qualifying us to be partakers of the inheritance as saints in the light. You have delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed to us the Kingdom of Your Son of Your love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. We pray all in the Name above all names, the Name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.
