When We Change, Things Change! ~ Surrendering as Wives

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”
— Psalm 51:10 (ESV)
There was a time in my marriage when I begged God to change my husband — to soften his heart, fix his anger, make him love me like he used to the first 4 years of our marriage.
But instead of changing him… God started with me.
He didn’t point fingers or lay guilt on me. He gently asked,
“Can you surrender first?”
Not because I was the problem — but because I was willing. And with surrender came breakthrough.
I thought the only way things would get better was if Bill changed. But God showed me that when we change — our heart posture, our reactions, our prayers, all of this can cause something beautiful to happen. The atmosphere shifts. And when the atmosphere shifts, God can move freely.
“Surrender isn’t weakness. It’s worship.”
Why? Because surrender is choosing to obey God and His word. Our surrender says: “God, I trust You more than I trust what I see.” And I know I’m not alone in wanting to see change in my husband before I commited to more change in me. I’m so grateful I finally chose to trust God first before seeing change happen in Bill.
Reflection:
Where is God asking you to surrender in your marriage today?
What would change in your home if YOUR heart shifted first?
Will you prayer with me?
Lord, create in me a clean heart. Make me soft where I’ve grown hard, to fix my anger, and to help me love Bill the way you love him. Teach me how to fight my battles in surrender, not control or fear. I lay down my expectations and I choose to walk in Your peace no matter what Bill says or does as I’m waiting. Use my obedience to bring change into our marriage I can’t force — and let our home be a reflection of Your love. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen. 💕
One last thing. God gives us a promise concerning our surrender. James 4:7 says, Submitt yourselves therefor to God, resist the enemy, and he will flee. (KJV)
When we submit our will, our everything to the Lord, He promises the enemy will flee when we choose surrender to God and resisting the enemies temptations to take things back into our hands.
